The building, which now houses the Museum of the Township of Bad Ischl, is one of the oldest salt merchants' houses in Ischl and belonged to the Seeauer family. Later it was a hotel called “Hotel Austria”; the lettering can still be seen on the building’s façade.

Engagement in Ischl

In today's Museum of the Township of Bad Ischl, formerly called “Seeauer House”, the engagement of Emperor Franz Joseph to Princess Elisabeth “Sissi” in Bavaria took place on August 19, 1853. From the balcony, the newly-engaged couple accepted the ovation of the people of Ischl.
