Perneckerstraße 74
Originally, the model of the Dachstein glacier, fondly made with natural stones, stood in the garden of the house at Engleitenstrasse 25.
The relief was built by the twins Anton and Felix Steinmaier. They were born on 18 June 1881 in Bad Goisern, where they were also buried. They were enthusiastic mountaineers and made several first ascents in the area of the Gosaukamm. The Dachstein glacier was particularly close to their hearts. In 1913, the family bought the Dachstein cottage ("Dachsteinhäusl") in Engleiten. In the same year, they started with the Dachstein model. The work took several years because they only used natural stones, which were to have an appearance as close to reality as possible. The Dachstein glacier relief was lovingly cared for by their descendants, and was an attraction for all those who made a pilgrimage to Lauffen and passed by the relief.
The relief shows the Dachstein glacier around the year 1900
In 2020, the garden was needed for a young family with children. That's when Mr. Lepold Schiendorfer from Perneck decided to dismantle the model and rebuild it in front of his house. Now all passers-by can look at this interesting and beautiful work, which is probably unique.
