Actor Helmut Berger was born on 29 May 1944 in Bad Ischl, but never lived here.

He achieved world fame with the title role in “Ludwig II “ (1972) by Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti. He appeared opposite actress Romy Schneider. The film was partly shot in Bad Ischl.
On the occasion of his 75th birthday on 29 May 2019, he was awarded the Cultural Decoration of Honour of Bad Ischl. Mayor Hannes Heide awarded the decoration in front of the newly erected monument. Berger thanked him with the words: "Thanks a million to Bad Ischl. I am very proud that I was born here."
On 18 May 2023, the actor passed away in Salzburg.
The monument made by Alexander Hanel shows the bust of Berger as Ludwig II, King of Bavaria. The white marble bust sits on a grey granite base.
