The station was opened on the occasion of the construction of the Crown Prince Rudolf Train in 1877 (Attnang Puchheim to Stainach-Irdning). It was built in the historicism style, and was very important because of Emperor Franz Joseph’s summer stays in Ischl. From 1894 to 1957, the narrow-gauge Salzkammergut local railway also ran from here to Salzburg.
Today, many buses run from this station in various directions, connecting Ischl with the entire Salzkammergut.
