Perneckerstrasse, former parking space for salt mine visitors
This shrine commemorates the accident of Countess Maria Rosa von Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky (née Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau) with a horse-drawn carriage on the very steep path from Perneck to the Empress Maria Theresia Tunnel. The exact date of the accident is not known, but must have happened between 1835 and 1842. The countess had gone off the road with a one-horse carriage and crashed. Since she thankfully survived the accident, she had a wayside shrine installed at the site of the accident as a sign of gratitude.
During the road extension works in 2005, this shrine was saved and restored. It was rebuilt at this location in 2021 by the Mitterberg Tunnel Syndicate (IG-Mitterbergstollen/Via Salis) (source and photos: IG-Mitterbergstollen, Horst Feichtinger).
