House at Vorsteherweg 3, known as the "Brahms Villa"

sogen. "Brahmsvilla"

In 1967 Johannes Brahms visited Bad Ischl for the first time when he was on a journey through the Salzkammergut area. The humble composer felt very comfortable in Ischl, and visited the town regularly from 1880 onwards. Between 1889 and 1896 he returned every year, enjoying the modest accommodation at Salzburger Strasse 51 (today Vorsteherweg 3), where he simply found tranquility at the edge of town. He also composed a lot here. In recent times, the house has been extensively renovated. A memorial plaque commemorates the composer’s visits.

Besides his summer residence at Vorsteherweg 3, Brahms sometimes stayed in Kaltenbach at Kaltenbachstrasse 34.

In Ischl, Brahms also met many friends from the world of music (Johann Strauss the Younger), literature, theater (Alexander Girardi) and science (Theodor Billroth).

A bust of him, sculpted and put up by Leopold Petter, is located in the backyard of the Museum of the Town of Bad Ischl.
