The physician Dr. Joseph Götz was born in Vienna in 1774 and died in Ischl in 1839. As a saline physicist (since 1807), he was the first to test and scientifically document the healing power of brine on miners.

As a physician, his greatest merit was his fight against smallpox.

Along with Dr. Wirer, Götz is considered a co-founder of the spa town of Ischl and gained a great reputation. He even became a "spa director", which he remained until his death in 1839.

In the Mitteilungen bulletin (No. 33, p. 16) of Cultural Heritage Society of Bad Ischl (Ischler Heimatverein), there is an interesting article by Dr. Michael Kurz about Dr. Götz. The grave of Götz is located in the Ischl cemetery (Sector 4, Row 3, Grave No. 5).

The commemorative plaque on his former home stands out for its distinctive lettering and probably dates back to the 1930s.

In 2022, a Dr. Götz monument was erected opposite the entrance to the Imperial Park by the Cultural Heritage Society of Bad Ischl (Ischler Heimatverein) (see here).
