Teacher and writer
Hofmann was born into a miner’s family and taught himself to play the piano and the organ. He studied German studies and art history and became a teacher. As a successful poet, he was a member of the PEN Club (the Austrian association of writers), and received the Golden Cross of Merit of the Federal State of Salzburg. He dedicated the book The House on the River (Das Haus am Fluss) to his beloved hometown Lauffen, outside of Bad Ischl.
The commemorative plaque is a simple stone slab in front of his birthplace and residence, unveiled on the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2006.
Dr. Hofmann's grave is located in the cemetery in Lauffen.
