The tunnel was built in 1775 and was originally named the Emperor Franz Tunnel (Kaiser Franz Stollen). In 1808, it was renamed to Empress Maria Theresia Tunnel (Kaiserin Maria Theresia Stollen). The tunnel entrance was located in the mining blacksmith building. In 1933, the tunnel was opened for visitors. In 2000, the visitor’s salt mine was closed for economic reasons and the tunnel entrance fell into despair.

In 2020, the mining blacksmith building was demolished, and the tunnel entrance was renewed. What visitors can see now is completely different than what used to be there.
