At the house at Ahornstrasse 11
MARIA KONOPNICKA was renowned Polish writer.
Maria Konopnicka (née Wasilowska) was born in 1842 in Suwałki (then: Empire of Russia, today Poland) and died in 1910 in Lemberg (then: Austria, today Ukraine). In 1872, she was married to Jaroslaw Konopnicki, a much older landowner, and they had 6 children. After 14 years of marriage, she went to Warsaw and devoted the rest of her life to literature and journalism. Her work was highly appreciated in the divided Poland. She visited many European countries. In July 1896, the poetess stayed in the house at Ahornstrasse 11. Konopnicka is regarded as an important Polish poet.
The commemorative plaque was installed in 1972. Unfortunately, today the plaque’s condition is quite weathered.
