The museum of the Township of Bad Ischl is located in one of the most beautiful salt-preparing houses from the 17th century. A striking feature of the house is the triple half-hipped gable.

In 1849, the young Emperor Franz Joseph celebrated his birthday here for the first time. Four years later, he got engaged to Duchess Elisabeth “Sisi” in Bavaria.

From 1880 the house was known as Hotel Austria.

In 1989, the museum of the Township of Bad Ischl was opened. With its historical, cultural and folkloric collection, it offers a glimpse into the diverse history of Bad Ischl, bringing the visitor closer to the area and its people.

The museum has been undergoing a redesign since 2023, and is scheduled to reopen in 2024.
