New York lawyer Andrew J. Onderdonk, a long-time spa guest of Ischl, donated the fountain in 1951 in memory of his parents, who had been spa guests as well. The fountain was created for another reason, too: to be a “water bowl” for Onderdonk's dog.

The fountain was designed by Upper Austrian sculptor Hannes Haslecker (see the Bear Family and Sea Lions sculptures at the school on Concordiastrasse). Haslecker built the fountain with the help of stonemason Josef Lechner (see also the War Memorial Chapel on Lindaustrasse).

In 2007, the fountain was removed during the construction of the underground car park. It was re-erected in 2013 in a slightly modified form, but unfortunately the Murano glass quarry mosaic in the pool was not adequately renewed.

Behind the rectangular, Schwarzensee marble fountain basin is a low pedestal with a Latin inscription on which rests a reclining female figure made of Kremsmünster conglomerate.
