Kaiser Franz Josef Straße
Also inside the parish church you can discover many Latin words. Go through the main portal and look up: at the entrance, at the top, it says "adorate Dominum in atrio sancto ejus", which translates to "pray to God in his sacred atrium". Already in ancient Rome, the large vestibule of a house was called an atrium.
To the right and left in front of the chancel are two large paintings. Those who donated them to the church are listed below:
“DEDICAVIT FRANCISCUS CAROLUS ARCHIDUX AUSTRIAE. MDCCCLI – Archduke Franz Karl of Austria donated the painting in 1851.“
“LUDOVICUS ARCH: AUS: DEDICAVIT ANNO MDCCCLIII – Archduke Ludwig of Austria donated the painting in 1853“
If you look up, you will find images on the right and left, so-called medallions: ANGELI – angels, ARCHANGELI – archangels, PRINCIPATUS – the dominion, POTESTATES – the earthly powers. In the middle at the top is a large medallion with the text: SOLI DEO GLORIA – To God alone is due to glory. Below them, symbolically, the VIRTUTES – the virtues.
The four evangelists are also depicted as holy (SANCTUS): S. LUCAS, S. JOANNES, S. MARCUS and S. MATTHÆUS (Here the E "sticks" to the A - this spelling is called "ligature" - see details on the inscriptions on the home page).
Look for where the other texts can be found:
“OMNIA AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM – All for the Higher Glory of God”
“IN MEMORIAM – In Memory of”
“RIP – Requiescat in pace – Rest in Peace”
