The parish church of St. Nicholas was built between 1770 and 1780, with Empress Maria Theresa assuming most of the construction costs. On 12 September 1780, the church was consecrated by the Auxiliary Bishop of Passau, Count Thomas von Thun-Hohenstein in honor of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of inland boatmen.

With the new building, the townscape of Ischl had changed dramatically. Instead of the small, dilapidated church facing east-west, there was now an imposing new north-south facing building: 52m long, 22m wide and a dome height of 20m. Only the Gothic tower from 1490 with its striking, twisted, octagonal spire with a height of 72m has been preserved.
