Villa Hansi Niese and Josef Jarno

Formerly Künstlervilla (Artists‘ Villa)

The Hungarian Josef Jarno came to Ischl as a young artist and got involved with the local theater. Soon afterwards, he earned a good reputation within the theater society and scene.

In 1900, he married the actress Hansi Niese, and they bought a villa, which they named after her. Hence, Villa Hansi.

From 1921 until 1930, Jarno was head of the Ischl Theater (in the foyer of the theater, there is a bust of Jarno). Until 1923, he was also director of the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna. In 1931, the house was sold due to the financial problems of the couple. A year later, Jarno died in Vienna. His wife died in 1934.
