Nestroyweg 1, Brennerstraße 13
Johann Nepomuk Nestroy (7 December 1801, Vienna - 25 May 1862,Graz) had a summer residence in Bad Ischl.
At the end of summer 1859, Nestroy bought this house in which poet Franz Stelzhamer also lived. Unfortunately, Nestroy could only spend the summers between 1860 and 1861 in his house. In May 1962 he passed away in Graz. After his death, his partner, the mother of his three children, inherited the house and spent the summers in Ischl until 1864.
Later, Franz Stelzhamer’s widow Therese also lived here.
Johann Nestroy’s world was the stage. In 1976, in celebration of Nestroy’s 175th birthday, the City of Vienna endowed the Johann Nestroy ring. In 2000, the award was renamed the “Nestroy Theatre Price” (“Nestroy-Theaterpreis”), and the Nestroy Society and the Municipal Council of Bad Ischl decided that after 2004, the awarding of the Johann Nestroy ring shall be conferred by the Municipality of Bad Ischl.
