In 1946, gendarme Friedrich Spernbauer was shot dead here in pursuit of a fleeing, presumably Polish, former concentration camp supervisor (from the Auschwitz concentration camp). The monument (a medium-sized furrowed boulder with an incised inscription, a small cross, and a lantern) was inaugurated only in 1956.
