On Salzburgerstrasse, directly at the junction of Kreutererstrasse, next to the bridge
The road was opened in 1867 and extended around 1870. Before that, the road led over the hill, today known as Vorsteherweg. On the postcards from around 1900, the wayside shrine seems to be missing. The old name “Good Shepherd” (still used around 1960) refers to the original cult statue.
The rather short but finely worked stone pillar on a natural rock base features a tabernacle with a round pediment. In the tabernacle is a deep semicircular niche currently decorated with a statue of the Good Shepherd. The tabernacle is closed with a honeycomb grille.
For many years, the shrine led a miserable existence, being located on the busy Salzburgerstrasse and situated behind the radar box. The original image of the Virgin Mary had been lost, as well as the grille and the cross.
In cooperation with the Municipality of Bad Ischl, the Cultural Heritage Society of Bad Ischl (Ischler Heimatverein) commissioned the restoration of the shrine and its removal to a more suitable location, i.e., next to the bridge over the Ischl River (Salzburgerstrasse-Kreutererstrasse junction). The consecration took place on 3 May 2017.
