A "cross" at the limits of the market court’s jurisdiction in the Gries is documented as early as 1451. In terms of style, the existing wayside shrine is difficult to classify, either late 15th century or the early 17th century. However, the shrine is probably the oldest wayside shrine in Ischl. Until about 1770, it was located close to the Grazerstrasse and Frauengasse junction, when it was moved to its present location.

The wayside shrine is quite unwrought, but made entirely of one piece.

In 2023, the Cultural Heritage Society of Bad Ischl (Ischler Heimatverein) had the wayside shrine restored. It was given a new foundation. Master stonemason Günter Brucker completed the pedestal and restored the monument. On top, a new cross was attached. Artist Hanni Ballerin painted a new votive picture based on the Gothic style. The painting shows St. Nicholas (patron saint of the parish) and Wildenstein Castle in the background.
