The ruins of the only castle in the inner Salzkammergut is almost hidden above the valley station of the Katrin cable car. The path up to the castle is not long, but it is steep and demanding.

Wildenstein Castle (originally called and spelled "Veste Wildenstain") was first mentioned in a document in 1392. From 1419, it was the seat of the imperial burgrave (pfleger), who ruled the Ischl area. The castle included towers, battlements, ring walls, and a drawbridge. From 1715, the castle fell into disrepair and became a ruin.

For years, the Municipality of Bad Ischl and the Cultural Heritage Society of Bad Ischl (Ischler Heimatverein) have been trying to preserve the ruins of the once mighty castle.

From the ruins you have a wonderful view of the Ischl valley.
